Microbiome Claims

Over the last few years, the cosmetics industry has witnessed the rise of skincare targeting the microbiome with products claiming to contain probiotic, prebiotic or postbiotic ingredients becoming more and more common.

However, despite its increase in popularity, this area of formulation innovation currently does not have any dedicated global regulations or international guidelines on definitions or terminologies. This has led to governing bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) questioning the efficacy, safety and quality of these types of products and potentially classing them as non-compliant cosmetic products.
