What is the European Green Deal?

The European Green Deal is a set of new policy initiatives as part of the European Commission’s (EC) growth strategy to implement the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the sustainable development goals. It aims to transform the European Union (EU) into a fair and prosperous society, with a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases in 2050 and where economic growth is decoupled from resource use.

The Green Deal will affect many policy areas, spanning all industry sectors, and includes many individual initiatives to put the EU at the forefront of sustainability and green matters. Many of these initiatives are interlinked and must be considered as part of a package rather than as individual initiatives or legislative frameworks.

What are the key objectives of the EGD?

  1. Zero Pollution: The EGD outlines a comprehensive strategy to tackle pollution across air, water, and soil through targeted actions such as the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) and the Zero Pollution Action Plan. These initiatives aim to enhance protection against hazardous chemicals, strengthen pollution prevention measures, and align industrial practices with climate and circular economy goals.

  2. Sustainable Development: By mainstreaming pollution prevention into all relevant EU policies, the EGD seeks to reinforce Europe's leadership in green innovation and digitalization while fostering social equity and economic prosperity.

  3. Legislative Revisions: Integral to the EGD's implementation is the revision of key legislation governing chemical management, including Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACh) Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation, and the Cosmetics Product Regulation. These revisions will ensure that ingredient sourcing and manufacturing processes align with stringent environmental standards.
